Joliet West High School has introduced weekly planners for all students as part of an initiative to support organization, accountability, and academic success. The school is asking students to bring their planners to every class and use them daily to record assignments and homework. If no homework is assigned, students are expected to write “none” in the appropriate space. Students are also encouraged to check off tasks once completed and review their current grades each week, recording them in the planner.
Families are being asked to encourage consistent use of the planners at home. The school notes that regular use helps keep students organized and builds strong study habits that can lead to better academic outcomes. Families are encouraged to review their student’s planner each week and acknowledge their efforts.
Joliet West High School serves grades 9 through 12 with a total enrollment of 3,310 students during the 2019-2020 school year, according to the Illinois Report Card (https://www.illinoisreportcard.com/). The largest group of students was in grade 9, accounting for 27.3 percent of the student body (https://www.illinoisreportcard.com/). Grade 10 made up 24.7 percent, grade 11 accounted for 25.1 percent, and grade 12 represented 26.1 percent of enrolled students (https://www.illinoisreportcard.com/).
The school's student population during that period was diverse: approximately 34.9 percent were white, 21.2 percent black, 39 percent Hispanic, and 1.7 percent Asian (https://www.illinoisreportcard.com/).
“We are excited to announce that JTHS students have been issued a weekly planner as part of our schoolwide effort to promote organization, accountability, and academic success.”
“All students are expected to bring their planners to every class and use them daily to record assignments and homework. If no homework is assigned, students should write ‘none’ in the appropriate space. In addition to tracking assignments, students are encouraged to check off tasks once completed, which is an important habit of self-monitoring. Each week, students should also review their current grades in each class and record them in their planner.”
“We ask for your support in encouraging your student to use their planner consistently. Regular use of the planner not only keeps students organized but also builds strong study habits that lead to academic achievement.”
“Please take a moment each week to review your student’s planner and celebrate their efforts in staying on top of their responsibilities.”
