Joliet Township High School and the African American Business Association are calling on community members to join the 17th annual Joliet-Area MLK Day of Service, scheduled for Monday, January 20. This event is an opportunity for people of all ages to engage in community service projects across the Joliet area, honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s legacy.

The day will commence at 7:30 a.m. with registration and breakfast at the Joliet Central High School Student Center Cafeteria located at 201 E. Jefferson Street. Louie’s Waffle House is donating French Toast, while sausage and bacon come from ARKAS Restaurant Group, and donuts are provided by Home Cut. The welcoming ceremony begins at 8:15 a.m., followed by service activities from 9 a.m. to noon throughout the community. Afterward, volunteers will gather back at the cafeteria for a tamale lunch donated by Ta Canijo and entertainment by Gabe Lozano from RIELTYME CREATIVE SOLUTIONS of the Chicago Bulls.

“The MLK Day of Service is a 17-year tradition in the Joliet-area community, drawing over 400 volunteers who complete service projects for organizations throughout the community,” stated Ericka Williams, MLK Day Co-Chair.

Kristine Schlismann, another MLK Co-Chair added, “It is an event for all ages where families can volunteer side-by-side. Whatever the age or ability, there is a project for everyone as we make our community stronger while honoring the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.”

Participants can expect to engage in various activities such as painting, cleaning, organizing food pantries, making blankets for homeless individuals, and decorating valentines for veterans.

Christopher Parker, African American Business Association Board Chairman said: “We invite residents of all ages and backgrounds to help advance Dr. King’s vision of equality and opportunity for all by making the holiday ‘A Day On, Not A Day Off.’”

Sponsors supporting this initiative include JM Printers; NAACP's Joliet Chapter; National Hook-Up of Black Women Inc., Joliet Chapter; and Jitters.

Those interested in volunteering must register before December 19.
