The Village of Shorewood has announced the start of its annual leaf disposal programs, offering residents two options for managing fall yard waste.

The Bulk Curbside Leaf Collection Program will begin on Monday, October 13. Crews will operate from 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Residents are instructed to rake leaves onto the parkway, parallel to the street and at least 12 inches behind the curb or pavement edge. Leaves placed directly in the street will not be collected until they are moved back onto the parkway, as this can block stormwater runoff and lead to street flooding.

Residents are reminded not to include debris such as garden materials, brush, cans, paper, bottles, or pet waste with their leaves. The village notes that due to varying leaf volumes and unpredictable weather conditions, it cannot guarantee collection on a specific day.

In addition to bulk collection, Shorewood offers a Bagged Leaf & Yard Waste Collection Program through Waste Management. Residents can use biodegradable Kraft yard waste bags for leaves and other yard debris until December 15. The final pick-up date is scheduled for the Tuesday before December 15. Bags should not exceed 50 pounds each; wet leaves may increase bag weight. Bags must be placed at the curb on regular trash collection days.

Branches and brush should be cut into four-foot lengths and tied into bundles with string or twine; each bundle must also weigh no more than 50 pounds.

"Leaves placed in the street will not be collected until they have been placed back on the parkway behind the curb or edge of the pavement," according to village instructions. "This will obstruct the flow of stormwater runoff during rain events and cause street flooding."
