Joliet West High School announces opening of new culinary arts facility
Tecara Parker, Principal | Joliet West High School

Joliet Township High School will hold a ribbon cutting for its new Culinary Arts facility at Joliet West High School on Friday, August 15 at 3:30 p.m. The event is open to community members, families, students, and staff. Attendees can park in any available spot and should use the Cafeteria Entrance at Door 5 off Glenwood Avenue.

The new Culinary Arts wing features two labs and one classroom. Each lab has eight student workstations and a teacher’s station, with capacity for up to 32 students per class. The culinary classroom includes a professional demonstration kitchen and café-style seating.

Equipment in the facility includes residential-grade appliances such as multi-range gas cooktops, ovens, and an espresso machine. Advanced audiovisual systems with integrated demonstration cameras are also installed.

The school’s announcement describes the space as designed to provide “a future focused learning environment for the culinary program.” The event marks what Joliet Township High School calls “a major milestone in educational innovation at Joliet West.”

Joliet West High School serves grades 9 through 12 in Joliet and Will County, with an enrollment of 3,310 during the 2019-2020 school year (https://www.illinoisreportcard.com/). Of those students, about 27 percent were in grade 9, while roughly a quarter each were enrolled in grades 10 through 12 (https://www.illinoisreportcard.com/School.aspx?schoolid=560992040170003). The student body included approximately 39 percent Hispanic students, nearly 35 percent white students, about 21 percent black students, and just under two percent Asian students during that year (https://www.illinoisreportcard.com/).

“We hope you’ll join us for this special occasion as we celebrate the launch of a vibrant and inspiring new space for culinary education at Joliet West,” reads the school’s statement.
