The Summer EBT program, also known as SUN Bucks, is a permanent nutrition initiative authorized by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA). It aims to assist families in purchasing food for school-aged children between 6 and 17 years old during the summer months. Eligible children will receive an annual benefit of $120 through an Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT) issued by the Illinois Department of Human Services (IDHS), starting at the end of May 2025.
Eligibility for SUN Bucks requires that a child must have been directly certified by IDHS during the 2024-25 school year due to participation in SNAP, TANF, income-eligible Medicaid (185% of the federal poverty guideline), or if they were identified as foster, homeless, or migrant. The child must also attend schools participating in the National School Lunch Program (NSLP) and School Breakfast Program (SBP).
Families who did not qualify previously but believe they may now be eligible should complete a program application with IDHS. Questions regarding Summer EBT 2025 can be addressed by visiting relevant online resources or calling the IDHS customer help line at (833) 621-0737.
In accordance with federal civil rights law and USDA regulations, discrimination based on race, color, national origin, sex, disability, age, or retaliation for prior civil rights activity is prohibited.
