The Illinois High School Association (IHSA) has celebrated the 50th edition of its Football Playoff State Series in 2024. The event concluded with the State Championship games at Hancock Stadium in Normal, held on November 29 and 30. To mark this milestone, the IHSA assembled a committee comprising current and former high school football coaches, administrators, and media members to identify the Top 50 Football Programs during the playoff era from 1974 to 2024.
Providence Catholic was honored with a ranking of #4 in this prestigious list. More information about this recognition, including statistics and records, can be found at https://www.ihsa.org/Top50Football.
Throughout its history in state championships, Providence Catholic has made 14 appearances and secured 10 titles. The school's victories include triumphs over teams such as Roxana in 1987 with a score of 14-7 and Bloomington in 1991 with a score of 9-3. Other notable wins were against Palatine in 1994, Sacred Heart-Griffin in 1995, Metamora in both 1996 and 1997, Oak Lawn Richards in 2001, Pontiac in 2002, Bloomington again in 2004, and Cary-Grove in both their losses and wins.
Despite setbacks like those against Chicago Mount Carmel in both the late '90s and early '00s or Sacred Heart-Griffin more recently in 2022, Providence Catholic's consistent performance over the decades has cemented its reputation as one of the leading football programs recognized by the IHSA.
