Students prepare for annual STAR assessments at JTHS
Matthew Narducci Assistant Principal | Joliet West High School

JTHS students in grades 9-12 are preparing for the annual STAR Reading and Mathematics Benchmarking Assessments to be conducted in their English and math classrooms. These assessments, carried out in the fall, winter, and spring, are designed to guide instruction and provide personalized learning opportunities to help students accelerate their growth in these subjects. The outcomes of these assessments influence course placement, content needs, and additional support requirements in reading or math.

Teachers have collaborated with students to establish goals and growth targets, using data gathered from fall and winter assessments. Students received their winter results in March, and the spring assessments are scheduled for Monday, April 21, through Friday, April 25. These will take place in their respective English and/or math classrooms.

The school encourages students to ensure their laptops are charged, get proper rest, and eat well before the test. The advice also includes taking the assessments seriously, as they could affect course placements, determine college readiness, and reveal strengths or areas for improvement. Reviewing instructions and questions carefully is recommended to avoid errors and work on the areas not fully mastered, which are crucial for summer preparations. Students are reminded to relax and put forth their best effort.
