Construction has commenced for the Village of Shorewood YMCA at the southwest corner of Route 52 and Wynstone. The village has collaborated with the Greater Joliet Area YMCA on this project.
According to a Village of Shorewood Facebook post, "the Village Board of Trustees approved the development of the state-of-the-art facility in the spring." It is anticipated to open in Spring 2026.
Groundwork began in September, as said in a village news release. An official groundbreaking ceremony will be scheduled to mark the commencement of construction.
The news release further states that "the village and the Greater Joliet Area YMCA plan a 45,000-square-foot facility will include an aquatics center with an 8-lane swimming pool, a gym with an indoor track, group exercise studios, and youth program rooms." Additionally, gathering and meeting spaces will be incorporated. The Shorewood facility is set to serve as the Y's regional headquarters.
The Y is described as "a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization dedicated to providing comprehensive programs and services to enrich the communities and the people who live in them," according to the village news release. More information about the Y can be found on its website at www.jolietymca.org/.
