The Village of Shorewood will commence its Bulk Curbside Leaf Collection Program on Monday, October 14. Crews are scheduled to work from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.
According to a news release from the Village of Shorewood, residents are required to rake leaves onto the parkway parallel to the street and 12 inches behind the curb or edge of the pavement. Leaves placed in the street will not be collected until they have been moved back as instructed. The release notes that leaves left in the street obstruct stormwater flow during rainfall and can cause flooding.
The village further states that residents must not include debris such as garden material, brush, pet waste, bottles, paper, cans, or other items in leaf piles. Foreign materials can damage equipment and pose a risk of injury to leaf collection personnel. Leaf piles containing any of these materials will not be collected.
The news release also specifies that leaf piles must not be placed behind obstacles such as parked vehicles, trees, mailboxes, fire hydrants, or streetlights.
Residents have the option to use Waste Management's Bagged Leaf & Yard Waste Collection Program which ends on December 15. Approved Waste Management yard waste bags can be filled with leaves and other yard waste and placed on the curb for pickup on normal trash collection days. Each bag has a weight limit of 50 pounds. Branches and brush must be cut into 4-foot lengths and tied into bundles with string or twine; these bundles must also not exceed 50 pounds each.
The village's Curbside Leaf Collection Program is scheduled to conclude on December 1 or at the first snowfall. Leaves placed on the parkway after crews have passed will not be picked up until the following week. Residents are encouraged to consider alternatives such as using a mulching lawnmower to mulch leaves back into lawns where trees are not mature or placing mulched leaves around plant beds and under trees and shrubs for soil nutrients and insulation.
